RYA Courses – NB Helm and Diesel

Narrowboat Inland Waterways Helm & Diesel Maintenance courses for adults in the

RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance Course   *£120 per participant

This course will give participants full RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance qualifications. As part of the course you will receive Maintenance Certificate and an RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance handbook. The RYA Diesel Engine course will run both on weekends and weekdays (please check the availability page – link above).

A hands-on, one day course taught on a 6:1 ratio.

RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Course   *£315 per participant

This course is for anyone wanting to cruise the UK’s inland waterways or Europe’s extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals (a CEVNI theory course is also required in Europe), & can be converted into an ICC (International Certificate of Competence). It deals specifically with the requirements of the inland boater, whether they be a narrow boat owner or cruiser enthusiast.  It assumes no prior knowledge and so is ideal for the first timer, yet the more seasoned boater will learn plenty of tricks of the trade and tips to make their boating safer and more enjoyable.

It is a hands-on course with minimal theory, and is not only an opportunity to learn new skills but it’s also a fun day out enjoying being afloat!

This is a two day course and is taken on our fully RYA spec boat. 3-1 ratio.

Minimum age 16.

RYA Inland Waterways Crew Course

The Inland Waterways Crew Course is an entry level course which can be run in conjunction with an Inland Waterways Helmsman’s Course, and would be great for families who would all benefit from being trained and involved to various levels.

The course covers all the basics of being a useful crew member, including personal safety; communication on board; throwing a mooring line; some basic boat handling; helping in locking operations; how to be a good look out; what to do in an emergency and looking after the environment.

This is a one day course and is taken on our fully RYA spec boat. Minimum age is 8.


British Canoeing 1*

This a course for complete beginners to gain the skills they need to go Kayaking.  It includes basic boat control, rescues, leadership skills and a journey along the canal.  It will give you the confidence to go Kayaking and develop a knowledge of the world of paddling and where you would like to progress.

All of our courses are run by friendly, experienced staff and they take place at our base on the Regents Canal, Islington. Prices include certification.
